In early April Kyrgyzstan's parliament ratified a border delimitation agreement with neighbouring Kazakhstan triggering consternation among opposition parties. The bill was pushed through, despite protests by opposition supporters, ahead of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev's visit to Kazakhstan in mid-April. The central concern is that the Kyrgyz authorities have ceded land to the economically mightier neighbour, while the government maintained that it was a mere swapping of land plots. Although we do not expect any major ructions as a consequence, we highlight that previous land deals - particularly the delimitation agreement with China in 2001-2002 - sparked riotous protests.
