Riot police violently broke up a demonstration by thousands of opposition protestors in Minsk on March 25. Over 100 people were hauled into trucks and detained according to the Belarusian Helsinki Group, a human rights organisation. March 25 has been a traditional day for opposition demonstrations, as it is the anniversary of the declaration of independence in 1918 by the first short-lived Belarusian state. Prior to the protest, President Alexander Lukashenka vowed to prevent any rallies commemorating the event. Security agents arrested activists across the country ahead of the demonstration and bus and metro stations were closed near the scene
