Russia and Kazakhstan agreed to set up a joint regional air defence shield in early January with Moscow promising a number of air defence systems as part of the deal, similar to an existing arrangement between Russia and Belarus. Both countries have reportedly been attempting to push the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) group of countries towards developing a more sophisticated regional air defence shield.
