Local Elections: Not A Game Changer

Slovenian local election results reflected poorly on the governing coalition, with the main Social Democrats (SD) failing to gain significant support in key municipalities including the capital Ljubljana. That said, the SD's have long performed much more strongly at the national as opposed to the local level, and the electorate also failed to swing significantly to the main opposition Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) at the polls. As such, we do not believe that the results will have a substantive impact on national policy direction or the stability of the ruling coalition. This is especially the case as parliamentary elections are still not due for at least 18 months.
