Relations With Russia To Remain Strained

Moscow's August 16 decision to expel Gabriel Grecu, a Romanian diplomat, from Russia is likely to heighten pre-existing bilateral tensions over the medium term. Grecu was expelled following his detention by Russia's Federal Security Bureau after 'an [alleged] attempt to receive secret information of a military nature from a Russian citizen'. The Russian authorities claim to have caught Romania 'red-handed' spying within the country and Konstantin Koshachev, president of the foreign affairs committee in Russia's Duma, quickly stated that this 'could generate a worsening of bilateral relations not only in the political field, but also in economic relations'.
