Coal Industry Facing Continued Decline

Romania's coal industry looks set for further downsizing in the years ahead given the European Commission's decision that state aid should only be paid to coal mines that have detailed closure plans. Without state subsidies, much of Romania's coal industry is likely to prove uncompetitive, with further job losses therefore likely unless Germany moves to block the new rules in order to protect its own state-dependent coal miners.
