Chinese Influence To Grow
July 2010 | Risk SummarySuzuki Muneo, a member of the Japanese House of Representatives and head of the country's Standing Committee on Security and Foreign Policy, visited Mongolia on July 22, as part of an event commemorating the 20th anniversary of Mongolia's first post-Soviet democratic elections. The visit supports our view that Ulan Bator is likely to maintain strong diplomatic ties with a number of countries, in an attempt to reduce its reliance on China and Russia. That said, we expect Chinese influence over Mongolia to grow steadily going forward, which could pose strategic risks over the long term.
