Support Continues To Fall

Public support for Lithuania's four-party coalition government continues to drop according to the latest opinion survey by Vilmorus conducted in July. Only 15.4% of those polled said they would back Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius' Homeland Union-Christian Democrat party, which is the most popular political party in the coalition. In contrast, the three most popular political parties are all currently in opposition, with 25.7% of the public supporting the Social Democrats, and 20.0% backing the Order and Justice party (up from 15.7% in April). These figures reinforce our view that the ruling coalition would see a slide in its support base in 2010, and we maintain our core view that early parliamentary elections are likely.
