During a state visit to the Turkish capital of Ankara, UK Prime Minister David Cameron announced plans to urge the EU to revise its current objections to Turkish membership of the 27-nation bloc. Such comments come on the back of French and German opposition to membership talks for Turkey, and a recent push by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to pursue a more diversified and non-Western foreign policy. At a time when the bloc has introduced new sanctions on Iran, Turkey's political alienation from Europe could potentially lead to more delicate diplomatic ties with the West over the coming years.
