Uzbekistan Secures Export Route

More than 2,000 railway cars destined for Tajikistan have reportedly been held in Uzbekistan since May 24. While Uzbek authorities claim that the cars have been stranded due to technical faults on the track, they have also refused to allow Tajik engineers across the border to fix the track. In turn Tajikistan has claimed it has lost up to US$100mn as a result of the stoppage and puts the blame on Uzbekistan's doorstep. The ongoing row falls in line with our long-held view that relations between the two countries would continue to periodically dip given their tumultuous past.
