Economy To Expand 5.0% In 2010

The Ukrainian economy surged out of recession in the first quarter of 2010, with a flash estimate from the State Statistics Committee showing real GDP expanding 4.8% y-o-y in Q1, well above the -7.0% and -20.3% headline growth prints posted in Q409 and Q109 respectively. While a full breakdown of GDP by its expenditure components is as yet unavailable, we believe the same trends that were in play in the latter months of 2009 continued unabated through March, with a marked improvement in the country's net export position (in the context of low base effects) being the key factor propelling growth higher.
