Ukrainian justice officials have deferred summons for former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko regarding a six-year-old bribery case. Tymoshenko was scheduled to appear before investigators on May 17, but the meeting was postponed as one of the panel members was called away on an urgent official trip. Following the election of President Viktor Yuschenko, prosecutors reopened a May 2004 bribery case, which was previously closed in 2005. Given the former prime minister's still strong levels of public support throughout the country, we stress that efforts to pursue the bribery case at this juncture could further undermine the country's underlying political risk profile.
