The election of Dervis Eroglu, a nationalist supporter of northern Cypriot independence, to the presidency of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will add to risks to Turkey-EU relations through the medium term. Eroglu's election victory is likely to add to risks to a permanent diplomatic resolution to the de facto division of Cyprus between ethnic Greek and ethnic Turkish populations in the south and north of the island respectively. Turkey, which is the only country in the world that recognizes the de jure independence of the north will come under significant pressure from the EU to exert its influence
