Slovakia's Prime Minister, Robert Fico, has stated that he will seek opt-out clauses similar to those being negotiated by the Czech Republic for the EU's Lisbon Treaty. He said that Slovakia is not against the treaty, but faced a choice of either blocking the Czech bid to seek an opt-out, or asking for the same privileges. The two countries seek protection from property claims from the descendants of Germans and Hungarians expelled from their borders after the Second World War under the so-called Benes decrees.
