August 2009 | Risk SummaryUnited Nations human rights experts and European Union officials have urged the Azeri government to end curbs on free speech. On July 20, an EU delegation including Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, delivered a protest to President Ilham Aliyev over the arrest of opposition bloggers Adnan Hajizade and Emin Milli on June 8. This was followed on July 31 by a statement from the UN Human Rights Committee in Geneva, which expressed concern about media limitations in the country. Despite the diplomatic protests, we see little scope for Baku to make any marked shift in its human rights policy going
