Suicide Bombings Spike In North Caucasus

Suicide bombings spiked in Russia's North Caucasus region through August. On August 17, a terrorist attack in Ingushetia killed 20 and wounded 138. This was followed by a suicide attack that killed four policemen in Chechnya on August 25. The attacks have been broadly linked to a protracted Islamist insurgency, though also reflect the relatively weak state control and institutional development of the government in the region. Going forward, we maintain that security risks are likely to stay very high throughout this part of Russia, weighing heavily on foreign investment and business development.
