No Stopping Smer
August 2009 | Risk SummaryPrime Minister Robert Fico's centre-left Direction-Social Democracy (Smer) Party remains the most popular political force in Slovakia, according to the latest opinion poll survey by Median SK. In July, 47.8% of respondents said they intended on voting for the party in next year's parliamentary elections, which is up from 46.8% in June. In contrast, the next most popular political party, the opposition Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKU), maintains the support of only 15.0% of the electorate according to July's survey (though up from 13.9% in June). Going forward, we maintain our view that Smer will easily win 2010's general election, with the party's robust support base likely to bode well for the policy-formation process.
