July 2009 | Risk SummaryAn amendment to Slovakia's State Language Act, signed by President Ivan Gasparovic in early July and due to come into force on September 1, has raised tensions with neighboring Hungary and drawn criticism from some MEPs in the European Parliament. According to the amended law, fines of up to EUR5,000 can be imposed for people who use minority languages in public services in areas where ethnic minorities make up less than 20% of the population.
