Aleksander Keka, the regional leader of Albania's opposition Christian Democratic Party (PDK), was killed by an explosive device on June 18. The incident took place while he was driving near Shkodra in northern Albania. Although the motive for the attack remains unclear, we are concerned that this latest development highlights the still elevated security risk in the country. Moreover, we caution that Keka's murder will also likely deal a further blow to Tirana's efforts to join the EU.
