The long-running border dispute between Croatia and Slovenia took another twist in mid-December. Following arguments over maps contained in documents submitted by Zagreb in support of its EU accession bid, Ljubljana vetoed the opening of ten chapters of the acquis communautaire. This means that Croatia has now opened 22 of the 35 chapters and closed seven. As we have been saying for some time, Croatia is going to have to resolve its dispute with Slovenia, given that the veto on further progress in accession talks could potentially remain in place indefinitely.
