Little Chance Of Success

The opposition party Erk (‘Freedom’) has nominated its candidate for the presidential elections in December 2007. Muhammad Solih seems to have relatively wide-reaching support – one website recorded that 70% of visitors preferred him to be the next leader – but we see little chance of a successful campaign. Notwithstanding the authoritarian regime’s widespread influence in media and business, the constitution even forbids Solih to run, as he has not been a resident in Uzbekistan for the past 10 years and is considered a criminal in his own country. Facing such, seemingly insurmountable, obstacles we see this candidate offering very little chance of producing a regime change.
