Election To Facilitate Policy Continuity

Valdas Adamkus has won the race to become Lithuania’s new president, replacing the impeached Rolandas Paksas. Adamkus, who has held the post before, beat Kazimiera Prunskiene in a second-round run-off. BMI View: Although the result was undermined by allegations of vote-rigging, we believe that the election of a new president should allow Lithuania to begin to repair its international reputation and concentrate on positive participation in the EU and NATO.
