February 2006 | Ratings UpdatePresident Nursultan Nazarbayev’s election victory on December 4, winning 91% of the vote, was entirely expected. Although the process was deemed flawed by international observers, there has been little unrest, representing a public largely welcoming of more of the same. A booming economy should ensure living standards continue to improve, though regional inequality is also likely to increase. We expect Kazakhstan to emerge as a more important energy supplier over the next decade, improving relations with most international powers.
