Earlier this year, a series of attacks in Vojvodina, principally against members of the Hungarian community, tested relations between Budapest and Belgrade, and threatened to require EU involvement to investigate the protection of minority rights in Serbia. BMI View: We believe that Serbia’s EU aspirations would be best served by a diplomatic effort to preserve co-operative relations with the Hungarian government. Having brought international political pressure to bear on the issue, it appears as though Hungary has been quick to realise the regional foreign policy leverage its EU status affords.
