EU Interested In Turkmen Gas
July 2008 | Political Risk AnalysisThe Turkmen government has come under significant criticism following the arrest and alleged torture of Sazak Durdymuradov, a reporter for US-backed Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. A colleague of Durdymuradov claims that the reporter was taken to a psychiatric clinic which has a reputation for taking in critics of the government. The US government has subsequently urged the Turkmen government to address the issue and prevent further abuse. That said, with Western countries keen to improve their relationships with the tentatively liberalising government the incident is unlikely to significantly depress the country's budding relations with the EU and
