June 2008 | Risk Summary

Bulgaria has pledged an additional 70 soldiers to serve in Afghanistan, bringing the total number of military personnel to 340. Of the new troop deployment, 20 will be sent to Kabul and 50 will join existing personnel at Kandahar's airport in southern Afghanistan. The decision follows NATO's recent plea for additional military support from its members, with Poland committing an additional 400 troops this year. Bulgaria's decision to raise its presence in the war-torn state may elevate risks of the country becoming a target for terrorist attacks.
