While NATO-accession talks slowly continue, much to the manifest chagrin of Russia, there are signs of mixed feelings among Ukrainians. According to a recent opinion poll by the Democratic Initiatives Foundation 59% of voting age Ukranians would vote against joining the military alliance in a referendum, up from 53% in 2007. While Ukraine has not reached candidate status yet the door has clearly been left open for accession. However, the apparent cold feet experienced by many Ukranians may not dissipate and this could prove a source of friction down the line.
