A report by US-based NGO Freedom House, Freedom of the Press 2008, has ranked Croatia's media as only 'partly free'. While compliance with rules guaranteeing equal airtime ahead of the 2007 parliamentary elections has highlighted by Freedom Housethe NGO still has concerns over state-ownership of sections of the media, self-censorship by journalists and regulatory standards. We expect improvements in the media environment as Croatia converges further towards EU norms and penetration of the sector by large foreign-owned groups continues.
