Putin To Remain A Major Political Force

We reiterate our view that outgoing Russian President Vladimir Putin will remain a prominent political force in the country over the long term. With Putin expected to take both the leadership of the United Russia Party and the prime minister's office on May 7, it is looking increasingly likely that his authority will not only stem from his influence with the presidential successor Dmitry Medvedev, but also from the country's legislative institutions.
