EU Enlargement Running Out Of Steam?
November 2007 | Political Risk AnalysisThe European Commission released its annual report on EU enlargement policy on November 6, outlining the main challenges facing the prospective accession states. The current accession countries include the western Balkans: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Serbia, as well as Turkey. So far only Croatia, Turkey and Macedonia are actual candidates for membership. However, the commission expects all remaining western Balkan countries to have signed initial agreements by end-2008. Although confidence in Balkan accession remains, there is a growing disparity between the pace of economic and political reform in individual countries.
