New Government, Same Faces

Parliament approved the formation of a new government on December 20, two weeks after the administration led by Aigars Kalvitis of the People's Party (TP) resigned in the face of mounting public protests over its ultimately unsuccessful attempt to sack the head of the country's anti-corruption bureau. The new prime minister is veteran politician Ivars Godmanis of Latvia's First Party/Latvia's Way (LPP/LC), who served as interior minister under Kalvitis and was the country's first premier after independence from the Soviet Union.
