The Macedonian parliament has lifted the judicial immunity entitled to former prime minister Vlado Buckovski, paving the way for his prosecution in an arms scandal. Buckovski is alleged to have inflated a purchase order for tank parts when he was defence minister in 2001, costing the country an estimated EUR1.5mn. This is an encouraging decision, reflective of Macedonia's increasing efforts to tackle widespread corruption in line with the country's goal of European Union membership.
