NATO Remains Contentious

NATO military exercises were held in Moldova in early August. These involved 500 servicemen from Alliance and Partnership for Peace states, practicing medical responses to floods and earthquakes. Although these seem to have been a success, Moldova's involvement with NATO remains contentious, especially within the ethnic Russian community, who see it as a threat to a rapprochement with Moscow. Indeed, local media reported as many as 200 protestors in central Chisinau, and with the exercises taking place around 20 miles from the break-away Transdniestria, it is hardly likely to have proved relations between the two
