Constitutional Amendments Secure Political Continuity
May 2007 | Political Risk AnalysisOn May 22, Kazakhstan's president Nursultan Nazarbayev signed the constitutional amendments, which remove the limits on the number of terms he can serve, potentially providing him with a life-time presidency. Kazakhstan's parliament voted almost unanimously in favour of the amendments on May 18. This amendment will apply to Nazarbayev only, as future leaders will be constitutionally limited to a maximum of two terms in office.
