NATO Ambitions

June 2007 | Ratings Update

While lip-service is still paid by Croatian politicians to 2009 EU accession, we have for some time been of the opinion that 2010, or more likely 2011, is a more realistic date. On a more encouraging front, US Under Secretary of State Nicholas Burns recently indicated that Croatia could receive an invitation to join NATO as early as 2008. Popular support for NATO membership is currently higher than that for EU accession. This good news next year could boost government popularity ahead of a likely revision in EU ambitions in the latter years of the decade.
