Prime Minister Survives Poisoning
May 2007 | Ratings UpdateA medical report, published on May 29, confirms that Kyrgyzstan's prime minister, Almaz Atambayev was poisoned by a toxin of unknown origin in mid-May. He is currently undergoing treatment, following two days of unconsciousness. Atambayev, a moderate opposition politician, was appointed prime minister by President Kurmanbek Bakiyev in March, in an effort to diffuse a political stand-off with the opposition parties. This event reinforces our view that even after the so-called Tulip Revolution in 2005, when Bakiyev's predecessor was removed from power, the country continues to suffer from political instability and high levels of crime going forward.
