The president said power struggles, corruption and populism have prevented much needed economic and social reforms from being adopted and implemented. The president's frustration is shared by Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas. In early April his Social Democratic Party, which leads a minority government, pushed for the dissolution of parliament and fresh elections as a way of breaking out of a legislative logjam caused by a dispute between the government and conservative opposition over the head of the country's security services.
