Election Surprise
March 2007 | Industry NewsLocal elections on February 25 threw up some surprise results and provided a further example of the fragmented nature of Lithuanian politics. The conservative opposition party Homeland Union received the highest share (about 17%) of the dismally low total vote but the Social Democratic Party, which is key player in the governing coalition, won the most seats in the 60 municipalities. The Order and Justice Party (liberal democrats) led by Rolandas Paksas, the former president who was removed from office by impeachment, performed exceptionally well, finishing third overall and entering into an agreement with the social democrats to run
