The re-election of pro-Russian leader Igor Smirnov in December, as president of the breakaway Transdniestria region, comes as little surprise. The poll, unrecognised by the EU, could contribute to instability in the region should Smirnov take the opportunity of a renewed mandate to push for independence. That said, while domestic political dynamics within Transdniestria appear unshifting, there appears to be tentative progress toward a long-term settlement on the international stage.
