New PM, Little Change
February 2007 | Ratings UpdateFollowing the resignation of Danial Akhmetov as prime minister, former foreign minister Kasymzhomart Tokayev has become head of government. We expect that there will be only minimal economic or political repercussions. This is because the cabinet, and premier, remain very much of secondary importance to President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who retains a tight hold on both the governing structures and policy. As a result, our short-term political risk rating remains on hold at 77, which is amongst the highest in the wider emerging Europe region.
