Losing A Battle, Winning The War?

Preliminary results from the first round of Polish local elections on November 12 show, as expected, that the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party sustained defeats in many towns, and could still lose the key Warsaw mayoral seat. Although final results have yet to be confirmed, and in many areas a second round of voting on November 26 will be necessary, main opposition Civic Platform (PO) won the largest proportion of provincial assemblies, whereas the PiS won more county and municipal councils. Overall, however, the elections failed to stimulate a seismic political shift that could have unseated the current government.
