A potentially violent political crisis was averted in Kyrgyzstan earlier in November, as the government rushed through a new constitution for the Central Asian republic. The document trims the powers of the president, transferring new duties to the legislative branch of government - an unprecedented move in the region. Whilst immediate risks to political stability have been tempered, it will take a long time for the political system to mature, and the government will still likely face pressure for reform from rejuvenated opposition
