October 2006 | Risk SummaryThe European Parliament (EP) is set to discuss the future of the sanctions it currently imposes on Uzbekistan in November, whilst the European Commission (EC) is keen to boost trade ties with the energy rich republic. Brussels has already hinted that the list of sanctions would not be increased, and by opening direct communication with Tashkent, has shown a new willingness to soften its stance on the authoritarian regime, some 18 months after the Andijon violence that prompted the breakdown in relations. That said, we expect the EU to remain cautious about expanding ties with Uzbekistan, as human rights abuses
