Making Friends

Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin met with a high-level Romanian delegation, including Senate Chairman Nicolae Vacaroiu, in late September, restoring bilateral relations that were disrupted in 2002. Romanian officials pledged to support Moldova's 'European integration' and will become an increasingly important friend for the small country in international circles, after Romania's EU accession next year. The announcement of increased policing of the breakaway Transdniestria region by the GUAM nations, rather than just by a Russian force, reinforces Voronin's foreign policy diversification from Moscow.
