October 2006 | Risk SummaryPrime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany looks to be holding firm to his premiership, having weathered over a month of sporadic protests, with crowds as large as 40,000. On the October anniversary of the 1956 revolution, 131 arrests were made, and the police used tear gas, rubber bullets and water canons to disperse protesters. There has to date been no sign that Gyurcsany will quit his post, despite what many see as a moral obligation to do so. He also appears to have solid backing from his coalition government, who control 210 of the 386-seat parliament.
