A leaked tape recording of Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany admitting he lied 'morning noon and night' about the state of the Hungarian economy sparked the biggest street protests seen in Budapest since the 1956 uprising. Thousands gathered in largely peaceful protests to demand Gyurcsany's resignation. The premier attempted to turn the situation into political capital by posting contrite responses on his website, and stressing the speech underscored his commitment to reform. Polls at the end of September showed just under half of Hungarians still felt he should resign, however.
