October 2006 | Risk SummaryPolitical stability in Kyrgyzstan remains a distant prospect, 18 months on from the 'democratic revolution' that changed the government. Bitter feuds between the executive and legislative branches of power continue to undermine any progress on democratic standards, which are already perceived to be minimal. Furthermore, the opposition, after a quiet summer, is threatening to mobilise more mass protests in October. The controversial constitutional referendum due before the end of the year will likely heighten tensions among politicians and the public alike, and we do not see a settled political climate for some time yet.
