The trial allegedly lasted only minutes, and was conducted behind closed doors, attracting condemnation from human rights groups in Europe. The incident is typical of a regime that uses the judiciary as a branch of politics, and shows little or no respect for human rights. The move is likely to sour relations with the West, though this appears to matter little to President Saparmurat Niyazov, who retains absolute control over his country.
