Ethnic Serb Tension

August 2006 | Risk Summary

The European Commission has again condemned the authorities' inadequate response to attacks on houses of former Serb refugees returning to Croatia, and has said it will closely monitor the issue during the country's accession process. There were 65 attacks against ethnic Serbs in 2005, the highest number since the 1991-1995 war. Both calming regional tensions and improving judicial procedures will be prerequisites of EU membership. Increased funding and an overhaul of the judicial system, mirroring Romania's development, can be expected in the years to come.
