Uninspiring Opposition
August 2006 | Risk SummaryWhile the ruling Socialists' popularity fell further in July, opinion surveys showed main opposition Fidesz still polling below 40%. Having lost his second straight general election this April, many observers had expected party leader Viktor Orban's proffered resignation to be accepted. Leading party members such as the mayor of Debrecen have said they do not expect him to be their prime ministerial candidate in 2010's elections. Fidesz's regrouping status should mean that even though the Socialists will sustain losses in October's local elections, these will be limited by the lack of a strong opposition.
